This past week I got to go on a camping trip with some of my art friends. I got to do some plein air paintings, and I also did a few sketches. Utah is such a beautiful place!

For this project, I found portraits of myself growing up. I then glitched these images by inserting text from journal entries written when I was that old. It was an interesting self-reflection to see what I looked like when I had written these entries.

Creating these glitched images was a very fun adventure. To start out, I would change the images from a .jpg file to a .txt file. This allowed me to see the code that created the image. From there I would delete, rearrange, or insert text in the code. This in turn would alter or glitch the image.
Part of the challenge of this project was finding good images to glitch. Some photos wouldn't glitch even after deleting large chunks of code, while others would only delete small lines in the image. Some images would just have large portions of the image turn grey, because too much information was changed. Creating these final glitched images was a careful process of push and pull. Sometimes I would change too much information and ruin the image, so I'd have to go back and change less, or change a different part of the code. Overall, I'd love to do more art like this! Although the process seems difficult it is actually quite simple. Although the method can be time consuming, I think the final result was well worth the effort! |
